In Château-d'Oex there are some amazing food options. However, our favourites are below:

Le Richemont

Our first top recommendation (pictured left) is only a short 10 min walk to the bottom of the hill from the apartment. They serve a wide variety of food, but our favourite part is the personalised pizza, and - if you ask if advanced - they will usually turn on a sports game if you cannot access it on our TV. Their website is linked here: https://www.le-richemont.ch/

Burger Station

Our next favourite place to eat is the Burger Station. The burger and chips served are incredible! We are always impressed by the quality. They are currently stationed on the main road and the website is linked here: https://burgerstation.ch/

COOP

Now this is not a restaurant, but perfect for a night in. It is a large supermarket and a wide choice of food. Also has got a great souvenirs section!!

Winter activities

The winter season in Château-d'Oex, has so many activites so we have included some top tips on a few of our favourites!

Ice skating

Right in the centre of this picturesque town, there is an ice skating rink where you can go and watch local games - or even give ice skating a try yourself. More information in this link: https://www.alpesvaudoises.ch/fr/P7238/pays-d'enhaut/patinoire-de-chateau-d'oex . Furthermore, you can always visit the ice rink in Gstaad to skate or watch some higher level competitions!

Bowling

An every visit experience in Château-d'Oex for our family, is going to the bowling. They serve food and drinks, have a wide range of arcade games (including our favourite - the basketball one) and a lively atmosphere. As an added bonus, it is also right next to the ice rink and in walking distance of the apartment. Check their website out here: https://www.bowling-du-parc.ch/

Cinema

Our next winter recommendation is a trip to the cinema! The films being shown are usually up on signs in the COOP but can also be found on their website here: https://www.cineden.ch/. However they also have concerts and offer refreshments and food!

Snowsports

Château-d'Oex is incredibly lucky to have it's own mini snow resort which is perfect for beginners. There is a small slope with fun activities as well as an area for mini tobogganing. There are instructors based there, as well as a café area which serves some of the best hot chocolate we have ever tried. The ski school is linked here: https://chateau-doex.swisskischool.ch/fr/ and photos are included in the slide show above. If you are a little more advanced, Château-d'Oex is right by the ski resort area of Gstaad which has 200 kilometres of ski slopes between 1,000 and 3,000 metres above sea level. The resort is accessible by car and train. There is a huge variety of slopes for all abilities with brilliant restaurants and activities. The website is linked here: https://www.gstaad.ch/en/winter

Furthermore, the apartment is only a 30 minute drive to Glacier 3000 - the only glacier ski area in the Bernese Oberland. More information on this is included in the previous link, but it is important to note that the Glacier 3000 is not included in the Gstaad ski pass.

Last information about this; for renting snow sporting goods we recommend Planète Sports. They have brilliant customer service and always get the equipment perfectly for us. Their website is linked here: https://www.planetesports.ch/

Summer activities

Visiting Switzerland is not only special in the winter season; summers here are incredibly special and allow for a whole new experience.

Outdoor swimming pool

Open from mid-May to mid-September (can vary), the pool is a perfect place to visit on a sunny day. There is a water slide, diving board, shallow play area, baby pool, changing rooms and a restaurant with events. There is even a volleyball court! At the restaurant there is a bar point so you can even order food and bring it back to your towels so you never miss out on the fun. More information can be found on their website: https://www.piscine-camping-restaurant.ch/.

Mini golf and park area

Right in the centre of Château-d'Oex, there is a crazy golf course and a large outdoor childrens play area. The play area is free entry and open all year round! The crazy golf is open May to October, and a must visit for all ages and abilities. Once completed we always grab an icecream whilst we are counting up the scores! For more information check here: https://www.alpesvaudoises.ch/en/P7767/miniature-golf-%22p'tit-golf%22-de-chateau-d'oex.

Disc Golf

Immersed in the Swiss mountains, try out this 10 basket course a short drive from our apartment. When we tried this out we got to see the local cows with their traditional bells on! The website is here: https://www.discgolf-denhaut.ch/.

Hikes and day trips

If you are thinking of taking a hike and want to know the best suggestions for your skill level, we would suggest going to the tourist office in Château-d'Oex. They will be able to show you appropriate hikes for that time of year and your skill. If you fancy seeing specific sights, such as trekking to a lake they can also help find a good spot. However, a good internet search will also do the trick.

For day trips you could go try out wakeboarding (https://www.wakeupgstaad.ch/), white water rafting (https://valrafting.com/en/activite/rafting-sarine/), or summer tobogganing (try the one on glacier 3000). For a more slow paced idea you could head off on a day trip to Gstaad to experience traditional food in restaurants/cafes and wander through the many designer shops. These can be accessed easiest by car or train.

Other top tips and info

Coming to stay in our apartment is a great experience all year round. Here is some extra information to keep in mind!

Hot air balloon festival

As the alpine capital of hot air ballooning, Château-d’Œx has been welcoming balloons from around the world for over 40 years now. The colourful festival takes place over 9 days and includes night shows, balloon flights, sporting competitions and a children's day. A balloon from Bristol even returns every year. It usually happens late January/early February - click here to find out exact details: https://www.festivaldeballons.ch/en.

However, it is possible to do a balloon ride throughout the year (weather depending). The picture on the left was from we went - booked through: https://ballonschateaudoex.ch/fr . It was a once in a lifetime experience and could not recommend enough. We even got a cheese and wine picnic once we landed before being driven back to Château-d'Oex!

Everything else
